Maison Ngarapou
Senegal 2025
As a second residence, this house in Senegal is designed to feel like a retreat: each bedroom functions independently and enjoys direct access from outdoors. A slender external stair ascends from the ground-floor terrace to the upper level, so guests can reach their rooms without passing through the main living area,an idea introduced by the client to evoke a more vacation‑like experience. The plan revolves around a courtyard pool that tempers the microclimate; deep pergolas and thatched roofs filter light and invite breezes, recalling the passive cooling strategies of local architecture where thick earthen walls and perforated screens insulate interiors and direct airflow.
Natural materials underpin the atmosphere of ease: walls are rendered in earth and stone to provide thermal inertia and minimise the need for mechanical cooling; timber structures and woven fibres lend warmth and tactility; every element, from custom furniture to the external stair, encourages relaxation. By combining these techniques with a thoughtful layout that privileges independence and outdoor living, the project translates the essence of a holiday home into an architecture rooted in its context.
